How translations work

eduActiv8 uses Transifex to manage translations online. This allows contributors to translate and review text directly through a web interface — no specialist tools or technical setup required.

eduActiv8 on Transifex

The Transifex project page is where all translation work takes place. You can choose your language, browse the strings that need translating, and submit your contributions directly.

What needs translating

There are two main files available for translation via Transifex:

default.pot

Contains most of the interface text used throughout the application — menus, labels, instructions, and activity text.

a4a_word_list.pot

Contains a list of simple words used in language activities, based on Arts4Apps images. These are short, child-appropriate vocabulary words.

Adding a new language

If your language is not yet included in eduActiv8, please get in touch before starting work. This helps ensure everything is set up correctly on the project side, and makes it easier to test your translation as you go.

A third file may also be created for you

When a new language is added, an additional file is created that handles language-specific elements — including alphabet handling, number spelling, and time-related functions. This file will be set up for you once the language is added to the project.

Updating an existing translation

If you are improving an existing language, you may also come across a file for that language in the project source. This file contains more specific or hardcoded language elements and is located at:

File path
/eduactiv8/i18n/custom/??.py

Here, ?? represents your two-letter language code — for example, fr for French or de for German.

This file covers elements that are specific to the language and cannot easily be handled through the standard Transifex strings alone — such as how the alphabet is ordered, how numbers are spoken aloud, or how time is expressed.

Getting started

Contributing is straightforward. You can do as much or as little as you like — every improvement helps.

  1. Visit the Transifex project page
Go to explore.transifex.com/eduactiv8/eduactiv8 and create a free account if you don't have one.
  2. Choose your language
Select the language you want to translate or improve. If your language is not listed, get in touch first so it can be added.
  3. Start translating
Work through the strings in default.pot and a4a_word_list.pot at whatever pace suits you. You can save progress and return any time.
